Causes and effects of climate change
Causes and effects of climate change
Introduction
The Climate change can be affected by natural and human factors. Natural factors are such as changes in volcanic activities and changes in solar radiation. Human factors are such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. The discussion below will be based on human factors because human activity is the main cause of climate change.
Human causes of climate change
Here we will mention two human causes of climate change. The first human cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. When men take fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal out of the land and burn them, they release the stored carbon dioxide into the air. The second human cause of climate change is deforestation. Forests remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Cutting them down means that carbon dioxide builds up quicker since there are no trees to absorb it. According to the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), during the 20th and 21st century the level of carbon dioxide rose 40%.
Effects of climate change
The harmful gases that human produces lead to negative effects to the atmosphere. One example is that earth will become warmer; the warm climate will melt glaciers and ice sheets, increasing sea level. The other example is that climate change can lead to crop losses and threaten the agricultural products reducing the nutritional value of food crops and increasing weeds and pests.
Conclusion
To conclude, human activity, fossil fuel burning and deforestation, is clearly causing the climate to change and, as a result, the planet is experiencing negative effects: warmer earth and crop losses. We must reduce the negative effects – for example, by using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels – before it is too late.
