Hydroelectric Power
Introduction
- Simplest electricity generation technology
- The process is 1) Gather water into a reservoir 2) Run water to a wheel or turbine 3) Channel water to generator 4) Produce electricity
Pros
- It is renewable because it uses the earth’s water again and again which will not be run out.
- It is clean. It produces no toxic or gases that pollute the atmosphere.
- It is cost effective.
- Building a dam will generate roads and construction which the remote can access to public facilities.
- The lake that form behind the dam can be used for recreational opportunities.
Cons
Building a dam to reserve water causes environmental and social effects such as
1) Altering the normal flow of river
2) Blocking of migratory fish passage
3) Creating flood in some areas and drought in some areas
4) Displacing of local communities. People living around the dam must move out.
Conclusion
Policy makers in every country have a hard time in deciding to construct a hydroelectric power because of pros and cons mentioned above.
